Mattia Mura (Italy)

Mattia Mura was born in Tuscany, Italy, in 1992. He graduated with a summa cum laude in Digital Arts from the Sapienza University of Rome in 2014. In 2015 received a scholarship and residency at Fabrica, Benetton research center. During the three years he spent in Fabrica, he filmed Macedonian revolts during the Colorful Revolution - in Chromoskopje, a short documentary installation part of MoCa, Skopje in 2018, the practice of the American photographer Drew Nikonowicz - in Notes from Anywhere, Finalist at LIDF, London, in 2017; and the life inside the spiritual community of Damanhur - The Choice of Staying, awarded as Best European Cinematographer in JIFFA 2020. Since 2019 he has been a freelance documentary maker based in Milan.

In 2020, his project, High Pressure, earned the special prize of the Meihodo Film Festival in Fukuoka City, Japan. He also gained an artist residency in Slovakia, on the border with Hungary, where he worked on Breakfast over the Bridge, a documentary series in three episodes about the theme of identity, screened on the Hungarian national TV from February 2022. After an experience of one month in Ecuador in 2021 for Selina Film Residency, his short movie inspired by Anne Frank’s values, Our Name is Anna (2021), has been awarded best short film, among others, at the Med-Limes Festival in Salerno (Italy) and the Zero Plus International Film Festival, in Siberia. In 2022 he will participate as a selected artist in Luxemburg at the Nomadic Island project, an artistic residency in Esch 2022, the European Capital of Culture.

His practice deals with documentary filmmaking to explore the concept of limit as an opportunity to share meaningful examples of life and experiences around the world. His core topics are spirituality and communities.
