White Darkness is a drama about partisans in the Tatra Mountains. The group of fighters are plagued by abysmal weather conditions and are eventually forced to fall back. Some of them are wounded and wait for help, while the rest of the group proceed with their mission. Čáp’s last Czechoslovakian film was made at the occasion of the 4th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising. While a popular director and also praised initially for the success of White Darkness, the film eventually caused Čáp to have to emigrate to West Germany as the content of the film put him at odds with the communist authorities.
