Marc Aurel-Strasse is Viennese, he is the last surviving Jewish textile merchant in what was historically the central textile district in Vienna, in the same area there is an Iranian hotel proprietor and the Café Salzgries with its regulars. These are some of the figures that are encountered in Ruth Beckermann’s documentary that was made from the summer 1999 until spring 2000. Beckermann undertook a series of small journeys around her neighbourhood and investigated her surroundings with the help of a film camera. The film gives an insight into daily Viennese life but also offers a look as to how an extreme-right party managed to join the government-coalition during this time.
