Few films are as perceptive about the routine gestures that amass over a lifetime spent together as Manu Gerosa’s Between Sisters. Ornella and Teresa have cared for each other through their whole lives. As Teresa's memory beginning to fade with age, Ornella — the younger of the two — decides to share a painful story practically as old as their relationship, reaching back to childhood.

Their relationship, as durable and as automatic in its rhythms as it may seem, is strained by this secret. As is the case with many people isolated with family right now, these two Italian women must work to actively renew their relationship if forgiveness and reconciliation — and a return to the casualness of everyday existence — are to be achieved. That process is depicted by Gerosa, who is Ornella’s son and who briefly appears in the film, with a tenderness and insight that speaks to his sensitivity as a filmmaker as well as his familiarity with the material.
