In April 1944 the military analysts of the Allied forces examined a series of photographs taken during American reconnaissance flights over Poland. The photos were of the buildings of the Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz. While this was the first evidence of the existence of Auschwitz, it was not proved, as we can only see what we know and what we are able to define - what was really depicted in the photographs was only confirmed in 1977. Farocki's remarkable reflection on the process and outcome of symbolic expression examines how visual information is processed and the limitations and potential of recognising an object from its image.
